BROMSGROVE & DISTRICT HEARTSTART
We are a team of local volunteers who are affiliated to the British Heart Foundation and deliver basic emergency life support training in the area. We receive no funding apart from donations, and our members have a wide range of first aid experience, although none is needed to join as full training is given.
Over the past year we have given 26 demonstrations to a total of 339 people, belonging to local clubs, walking groups, hospital groups, colleges, schools, businesses and the Guides. We meet monthly in Hagley to organise and discuss our demonstrations and to train so that our skills are always up to date with current practices.
Demonstrations involve a minimum of four of our team visiting a venue to deliver training. The topics we cover are:
How to deal with loss of consciousness
How to perform CPR
A defibrillator demonstration
How to deal with choking
Recognition of someone having a heart attack
Control of severe bleeding.
These sessions are usually very lively and require active audience participation where everyone is encouraged to have a go using our specially adapted mannequins. At the end of the course certificates are issued to those who have successfully participated, followed by a Q and A session. We often get to hear of stories of how someone’s life has been saved after they have received similar training, and that makes it all worth while.
So if you would like to know how to save a life or know of any group that would benefit from a training session then please contact Judy Hancox on 883832 for an informal chat about what is involved.
